The heavyweights meet on the drag strip, with Chevrolet taking on Ford in a number of races between the muscle cars.
When we discuss the world of American muscle cars, both the Chevrolet Camaro and the Ford Mustang GT are at the top of the food chain. They offer the best of both worlds – a perfect daily driving car and a track-ready monster. Yet, they are different enough to suit the palate of diverse fans, who often try to pit them against each other to see who’s got the better machine.
YouTube channel Wheels covered such an event wherein two different Chevy Camaros — the SS, and the ZL1 — take on the Ford Mustang GT in a drag race. Let’s see who proves to be the mightier one in this battle.

The Mustang preceded the Camaro in the '60s, although Chevy later brought the Camaro, calling it a “Mustang eater.” As of today, a high-revving 5.0-liter Coyote V8 motor sits under the hood of the Ford Mustang, hammering out 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. This power plant puts up a 4.0-second 0 to 60 mph show when paired with the 10-speed automatic at a top speed of 155 mph.
Mustang’s long-time rival and Chevy’s bow-tie boy, the Camaro ZL1, and the Camaro SS also hide insane power plants under their hoods. While the ZL1 bears a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 cranking out 650 horsepower and an equal amount of torque, its sibling, the SS, pumps out 455 horsepower and an equal amount of torque from a 6.2-liter LT1 V8.
With a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.4 seconds for the ZL1 and 3.9 seconds for the SS, it looks like both the automatic-equipped Camaros have an edge over the Mustang in this drag race.

In the first bout, the red Mustang GT clocked the quarter-mile in 12.12 seconds at 127.35 mph, while the blue Camaro SS lagged and cleared the quarter-mile in 13.43 seconds at 109.20 mph. Next comes a nerve-racking bout where a white Mustang GT goes against the mightiest of the three — a Camaro ZL1 in red. It’s a massive win for the Mustang GT again, as it clocks the quarter-mile in 12.65 seconds at 114.36 mph, while the better-equipped Camaro ZL1 runs the same in 18.97 seconds at 144.73 mph.
In the third spell, it’s the same blue Camaro SS against a new red Mustang GT, but this time it's a revenge win for the Camaro SS as it races the quarter-mile in 12.97 seconds at 109.39 mph, while the Mustang GT takes 14.20 seconds at 105.89 mph.
